Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)

IDI StagesThe Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®), developed by Dr. Mitchell Hammer, assesses intercultural competence — the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities. The IDI is a 50-item questionnaire that has demonstrated validity and reliability across cultural groups and is used in over 40 countries in business, education, the not-for profit sector and government.

You will receive an in-depth graphic profile of your individual, or group level of intercultural competence along with a detailed textual report.

The IDI Individual Profile Report provides valuable information about your own orientations toward cultural difference and commonality.

The IDI does not “label” you. It simply tells you how you are currently approaching cultural differences and commonalities and gives you a direction in which to develop your intercultural competence.

Accompanying your IDI profile report is a customized, IDI Intercultural Development Plan® (IDP®).  This is a comprehensive map of how you can increase your intercultural competence based on your own, unique, IDI Profile.

The IDP is designed to be used by you independently however, it is more effective when we work with you and support you through the developmental process. Your results will be better, deeper and faster!

Coaching and the IDI

The IDI can be incorporated into our coaching process in a variety of different ways including:

  • IDI assessment followed by your individual profile debrief of 1 hour in duration.
  • IDI assessment + your individual profile debrief, followed by a customized coaching package that includes coaching to your IDI Development Plan (IDP) in order to help you shift your cultural perspective, adapt your behavior across cultures and increase your intercultural competence.
  • IDI assessment for small groups of up to 8 persons. This includes a group profile debrief and a customized follow-up coaching package which includes coaching to the group IDI Development Plan.

The IDI can also be successfully integrated into our Cross-Cultural Coaching and Leadership Development Coaching programs.
